The Renand Foundation was founded in 2015 by two Fort Lauderdale residents, Andis Tamayo and Renato Silva. While traveling to Bassin Bleu, one of Haiti’s most beautiful natural resources near Jacmel, Andis and Renato saw firsthand the devasting impact of both poverty and the Restavek (child slavery) tradition on Haitian family life. Under their leadership, the Renand Foundation’s initial mission was to rescue children from slavery and reunite them with their families in the Bassin Bleu community.
It rapidly became evident that the best hope for these children was to ensure that local families had sufficient income to provide food, clothing and shelter to their children. From the Foundation’s inception, its approach has been to create opportunities to earn a basic income and to provide needed resources for a better future. The Foundation does not merely give money to individuals. Instead, it helps create a thriving community and family life by paying for the education of otherwise helpless children grades K through 6, and ensuring that all related services, such as food and health care, are secured through local vendors.
For nearly a decade, the Foundation has built schools, offered basic healthcare, and provided economic opportunities, including employment in teaching, medical services, construction and related skills. By sourcing supplies locally whenever possible, the Foundation has helped to build businesses in the community.
The money provided by the Renand Foundation to fund their operations in Haiti is wired monthly directly to the bank account of the Foundation’s local affiliate, Foyer Socio-Culturel Renand (FSCR). The Renand Foundation does not permit any moneys to be paid to government officials or others outside of ordinary and necessary operations. Copies of the Renand Foundation’s most recent annual report to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service on Form 990 may be requested through our contact page.
