THE PROBLEM WE’RE SOLVING
Rural communities in Haiti are typically filled with trash as there’s no government run trash program and are lacking in beautification elements such as gardens and landscaping that make a community a more pleasant place to live. Rural communities also struggle with inefficient and ineffective farming practices and lack of seeds. In many communities there’s a lack of effective animal husbandry. This means there is little local food and the people are living in unpleasant and unsanitary living conditions.
Nutrition is sporadic in Haiti. Most people eat only once a day or a few times per week. The situation can be so dire that in one of the communities we serve, Lakow Chadow, people often eat cookies made out of dirt and salt.
WHAT WE’VE DONE SO FAR
TRASH We’ve worked with local, political and spiritual leaders to designate two landfills and created a trash initiative that ties in with our Champions of the Community Program. This includes training for all community members on how to deal with trash and the health implications if it’s not attended to. On a weekly basis we have over 30 part time volunteers that pick up trash three times a week along with our families, school children and champions. We provided picks, shovels, trash bags and wheelbarrows and the entire village was spotless in one month. This program is fully sustainable and the community is proud of the cleaner environment and more pleasant living conditions.
COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION We’re working with community leaders and members to landscape the community and provide gardens for individual houses and training on how to create and maintain these gardens. Community members have remarked about how much more positive the community feels with the addition of these beautification projects.
FARMING We’re actively working to support Bassin Bleu farmers including providing seeds and training on more efficient farming practices such as crop management and crop rotation.
ANIMAL HUSBANDRY The Renand Foundation in partnership with Food for the Poor (LINK NEEDED) is establishing a poultry husbandry program to develop a chicken coop. Eggs and poultry meat will be available on a regular basis to eradicate the severe state of malnutrition the people of this community live in.
OUR FUTURE PLANS
Community enhancement is so important for creating a positive and sustainable community. We want to grow these programs but also empower community members to actively lead and contribute to these programs and take ownership over their community.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Your donations to the Community Enhancement program will be so beneficial for the community. They will contribute towards:
- Training and support for the trash program
- Seeds and training for farmers
- Training and equipment for the community beautification program
- Investment in the poultry husbandry program including purchasing chickens and chicken feed and supporting those who work with the coup.
We are also seeking volunteers for this program who can contribute to any of the projects.DONATE TO THE COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM FIND OUT ABOUT VOLUNTEERING
